What is the difference between Gen 2+ and Gen 3 night vision?
Gen 2+ and Gen 3 use different image intensifier technologies. Generation alone doesn’t determine performance—a high-spec Gen 2+ tube can outperform a lower-spec Gen 3 tube in certain metrics. We recommend comparing the actual tube specifications as well as the generation.
If your budget allows for it, and you are legally able to purchase it, a high spec Gen 3 tube offers improved low light performance over a similar spec Gen 2+ tube. But Gen 2+ still delivers very effective capabilities at an accessible price point. Keep in mind that Gen 3 tubes are ITAR controlled and not legal for export outside of the United States.
What is FOM, and does higher FOM mean better night vision?
FOM (Figure of Merit) is a simple way of summarizing two important night vision specifications into one number: image resolution × signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
Resolution measures how much fine detail the tube can reproduce, while SNR describes how clearly the tube can form an image without it being overwhelmed by visual noise or “static,” especially as conditions get darker.
In general, a higher FOM indicates a tube capable of producing a cleaner, more detailed image. However, FOM isn’t an overall quality score. Two tubes with the same FOM can perform differently because FOM doesn’t account for other characteristics such as gain, EBI, halo, blemishes, or the quality of the optics.
What is the difference between white and green phosphor?
The difference is primarily how your eyes perceive the image, rather than the color determining the performance of the night vision tube itself.
White phosphor produces a more neutral, grayscale-like image. Many users find this more natural and intuitive because differences between light and dark resemble the way we normally interpret a monochrome scene.
Green phosphor takes advantage of the human eye’s high sensitivity to green light. This can make contrast and fine differences in brightness easy to perceive.
Neither is inherently better. Green phosphor emphasizes the eye’s sensitivity to green, while white phosphor offers a more natural-looking grayscale image. Ultimately, phosphor choice is largely personal preference.
Should I buy a monocular or binocular night vision device?
Choose a monocular if you prioritize cost, weight, and versatility. A monocular such as a PVS-14 gives you capable night vision at a much lower cost than a binocular system, while leaving your unaided eye free to see ambient light or bridge it with a thermal. A monocular can be used handheld or helmet-mounted and is easy to store, carry, or lend to another person. For many first-time buyers, a monocular offers the best value.
Choose binoculars if you prioritize mobility and a more natural viewing experience. Having an intensified image presented to both eyes makes it easier to visually process your surroundings, especially with the added depth perception. It is generally preferable when moving quickly, navigating uneven terrain, driving, or wearing night vision for extended periods.
If night vision will be used occasionally or budget is important, a monocular is often the practical choice. If you’ll be moving under night vision frequently or wearing it for long periods, the advantages of binoculars become much more impactful.
Do night vision devices work in complete darkness?
Night vision amplifies available light, so performance decreases when there is insufficient ambient light. Star light (even behind an overcast sky) is sufficient to illuminate your environment enough to navigate with our Gen 2+ devices.
Are spots or blemishes in night vision tubes normal?
Yes. Small spots are a normal result of the image intensifier manufacturing process and can be present even in brand-new, high-quality tubes. Night vision manufacturers account for this by grading tubes according to the size, number, and location of these spots within the image. The viewing area is commonly divided into zones, with the center of the image held to the strictest cosmetic standards because blemishes there are the most noticeable. A tube can therefore have small visible spots while still meeting all of its performance and quality specifications.
Do you test your night vision devices before shipping?
Every complete night vision system is QC tested before it reaches you to ensure it meets our quality standards.
What warranty do your night vision devices include?
Our night vision systems include a 1 year warranty coverage that covers manufacturing defects and workmanship. The warranty does not cover end user physical damage, water intrusion as a result of physical damage or exceeding IP ratings, nor burn-in from exposure to intense light or prolonged exposure to lights. However, should any user induced damage occur, we do offer repair services for our devices.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship internationally. However, we do not ship to countries where night vision devices are prohibited or heavily restricted. Night vision equipment may also be subject to export, import, customs, or other regulatory restrictions depending on the product and destination. We also do not export any ITAR controlled items from the US. Do note, Gen 2+ night vision does not fall under ITAR.
