BNVD-1431 MK2 is a multi-purpose binocular night vision device (BNVD). It uses standard MX-10160 18mm image intensifier tube (IIT) and can work with MX-11769 tubes after minor modifications. G24 mount is included.
Lead time for this device is currently 5 weeks.
Each optical pod independently articulates up to 140°, allowing either side to be moved out of the user’s field of view as lighting conditions or operational requirements change. An integrated gravity sensor automatically controls power based on the position of the device. When the binocular is flipped upward on a helmet or head mount, the system automatically powers down, helping prevent unwanted light from the eyepieces while protecting the image intensifier tubes from unnecessary exposure.
When paired with autogated image intensifier tubes, the system can rapidly adapt to sudden changes in ambient light, maintaining a usable image when exposed to bright or intermittent light sources without requiring the user to remove the device.
The housing is constructed from high-strength, fiber-reinforced polymer selected for its durability, rigidity, and resistance to demanding environmental conditions. A single standard AA battery provides more than 15 hours of operation under typical conditions. An optional external battery pack can extend runtime beyond 50 hours.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 is compatible with U.S. military-standard PVS-14 optics (#A3256342), providing access to widely available replacement and aftermarket components. The platform can also accommodate a range of alternative optics, including commercial 40° and 51° lenses as well as lightweight resin lens systems.
Compatible equipment for mission-ready configurations.

Here you can get answers to common questions about our products, understand the different options, and determine what setup fits your requirements.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 is an articulating, dual-tube binocular night vision system designed around standard 18 mm image intensifier tubes.
Unlike a monocular, it provides an intensified image to both eyes, providing depth perception and creating a more natural viewing experience when navigating, moving, or using night vision for extended periods.
Each optical pod can also articulate independently, allowing the goggles to fold into a more compact position or allowing one pod to be moved out of the way when required.
The biggest difference is the viewing experience.
A PVS-14 provides night vision to one eye while your other eye remains unaided. This makes it lightweight, versatile, and considerably less expensive, but your brain has to process two very different images.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 provides an intensified image to both eyes, making your surroundings feel more natural to visually process. This is particularly noticeable when walking, navigating uneven terrain, or wearing night vision for extended periods.
The BNVD-1431 MK2’s biggest advantage is its modularity and compatibility with widely available components. The PVS-31 is a highly integrated system with proprietary components, while the BNVD-1431 MK2 was designed around the established PVS-14 ecosystem. This gives the 1431 several practical advantages:
Replaceable and upgradeable optics: The BNVD-1431 MK2 accepts standard PVS-14-style objective and eyepiece assemblies. This gives you a wide selection of replacement and aftermarket optics and allows the lenses to be upgraded without replacing the entire system.
Greater tube flexibility: The housing accepts standard 18 mm image intensifiers, including MX-10160-format tubes and compatible manual-gain configurations. This allows the system to be built with a wide range of Gen 2+ and Gen 3 tubes at different performance levels and price points.
Easier to repair and maintain: Because the 1431 uses commonly available tube and optical formats, damaged components can generally be replaced individually. You’re less dependent on proprietary replacement parts or returning the entire system to its original manufacturer.
Each optical pod can independently rotate outward by up to 140°.
This lets you swing one or both pods away from your eyes without removing the goggles. Articulating both pods outward also gives the goggles a lower profile when stowed against your helmet compared with leaving the entire binocular assembly extended in front of you.
Because the pods move independently, you can also temporarily move one pod away and use the system over a single eye.
Yes. A built-in sensor detects when the goggles have been flipped upward and automatically shuts the tubes off. Lowering the goggles returns power automatically.
Unlike systems that depend on a magnetic interface within a particular mount, the sensor is built into the BNVD itself.
The automatic flip-up and dormancy functions can also be disabled when required.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 incorporates a motion-based power-saving system.
If the device remains stationary for an extended period, it enters a dormant state and shuts off power to the image intensifiers. Once movement is detected again, the system automatically powers them back on.
This helps conserve battery life and reduces unnecessary operating time on the tubes.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 is designed around 18 mm MX-10160-format image intensifier tubes, giving you access to a wide range of Gen 2+ and Gen 3 tube options.
This allows the same housing platform to be configured with different tube technologies, performance levels, phosphor colors, and price points.
It depends on the tubes installed.
When equipped with compatible manual-gain tubes, including appropriate three-pin or MX-11769-style configurations, the BNVD-1431 MK2 supports manual gain adjustment using the main control knob.
Manual gain allows you to reduce or increase the brightness of the intensified image according to your environment and preference.
If your selected tube configuration does not support manual gain, the gain control function will not be available.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 is compatible with standard PVS-14-specification optics, giving it access to one of the largest ecosystems of night vision lenses and replacement components.
It can also be configured with alternative commercial optics, including lightweight and wider-field-of-view options.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 can operate from a single AA battery installed directly in the housing.
The runtime is rated at more than 15 hours under normal temperatures from the internal AA battery.
Yes. The BNVD-1431 MK2 supports an external battery pack.
With an external battery pack, rated runtime increases from more than 15 hours on the internal AA to more than 50 hours under normal-temperature conditions.
A rear-mounted battery pack can also help redistribute some of the overall helmet system’s weight toward the back of the helmet.
The BNVD-1431 MK2 has an integrated standard dovetail mounting interface compatible with Wilcox-style dovetail mounts.
This allows it to work with the established night vision mounting ecosystem rather than requiring a proprietary mounting system.
You’ll typically need a helmet with a compatible shroud and a dovetail night vision mount.
The PVS-14 runs on one standard AA battery, making replacement batteries inexpensive and widely available.
The system is rated for 50+ hours of operation on a single battery. Actual runtime can vary with battery type, temperature, use of the built-in IR illuminator, and other operating conditions.
For long-term storage, we recommend removing the battery to prevent potential damage from battery leakage or corrosion.
The housing is IP68 rated, meaning it is rated for continuous water immersion beyond the 1-meter immersion test of the IP67 rating common with most waterproof devices.
It is designed for use in demanding outdoor environments, including exposure to water, dust, rain, and adverse weather.
Yes. The housing incorporates an IR flood illuminator for additional short-range illumination in environments where there isn’t enough ambient light for passive night vision.
For greater distances or substantially larger areas, an external IR illuminator may be more appropriate.
Yes. Image intensifier tubes should still be protected from unnecessary exposure to intense light.
Features such as autogating can improve performance in changing or relatively bright lighting conditions, but they do not make an image intensifier immune to damage.
Prolonged or sufficiently intense exposure can result in temporary image retention or permanent burn-in. Avoid leaving operating night vision pointed at intense light sources unnecessarily.
FOM (Figure of Merit) combines two important tube specifications into one number:
FOM = Resolution × Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
Resolution describes how much fine detail the tube can reproduce, while SNR describes how clearly the tube can form an image without it becoming overwhelmed by visual noise, particularly as conditions get darker.
For example, a tube with 64 lp/mm resolution and an SNR of 30 has a FOM of 1,920.
Higher FOM generally indicates greater potential for a clean, detailed image, but it isn’t an overall quality score. Gain, EBI, halo, tube cosmetics, optics, and other characteristics also affect what you actually see.
Phosphor determines the color in which the intensified image is presented.
Green phosphor produces the traditional green night vision image and takes advantage of the human visual system’s strong sensitivity to wavelengths in the green region.
White phosphor produces a more neutral, grayscale-like image that many users find natural and intuitive to interpret.
Neither color inherently makes a tube higher performing. The specifications and quality of the individual image intensifier matter considerably more than phosphor color, so this choice largely comes down to preference.
For binocular night vision, it is desirable for the two image intensifiers to have reasonably similar characteristics so the image presented to each eye does not differ excessively. We match tube pairs to provide a comfortable experience with your device.
